Dept. of Public Works
The Department of Public Works maintains all public roads, utilities such as sanitary sewer and water systems, public spaces and parks, street lights, street trees, sidewalks infrastructure, buildings and grounds.

- Snowplowing/Snow removal/Ice removal
- Leaf collection
- Storm and sanitary sewer construction and maintenance
- Tree cutting and trimming
- Maintenance of city parks
- Fleet maintenance
- Annual spring cleanup
- Sign installation and maintenance
Streets
Our Department is responsible for 70.72 miles of streets in our Local (50.62 miles) and Major (20.15 miles) Street system. These duties include, but are not limited to, cold patching, storm sewer maintenance, street/traffic sign replacement, street painting and snow plowing/salting. Property owners are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice.
Sewer
The DPW is responsible for the maintenance of sewer and storm lines ranging in size from 8” to 148" in diameter on public property (utility lines on private property are maintained by the property owner). Waste water treatment is handled by the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Joint Sewage Treatment Plant. You can reach the plant by calling (906) 774-2255.
Water
Our Department performs all maintenance on the water transmission system on public property (utility lines on private property are maintained by the property owner). This system consists of approximately 45 miles of water mains, approximately 650 valves and approximately 620 fire hydrants. There are also approximately 3,500 water taps in the system. We are continually replacing old water meters throughout the City.
Parks and Recreation
Service City parks and playgrounds and install new playground facilities and equipment as needed.
Solid Waste
The City contracts with Great American Disposal for collection and disposal of curbside trash and debris, including recyclable materials, throughout the City. You can call G.A.D. for schedules and information at (906) 774-9006.
Other Functions
This Department is responsible for the City’s composting program which consists of leaf collection in the fall and annual brush pickup. Yard waste can be brought to the DPW compost site during regular business hours from 7:00am to 3:30pm M-F.
