WATER LET RUN POLICY (Water Utility Billing Rules & Regulations)
In December or January, at the discretion of the water department foreman, customers who have a history of freezing problems (water or sewer) will be notified to let their water run. A meter reading must be taken at the time of notification and entered in the WLR Log along with date reading was taken. Water Department will notify the consumer to cease the let run when the possibility of freezing is past. A reading must be taken upon termination and recorded. If reading cannot be determined, and a second attempt made to read the meter proves unsuccessful, a notification tag will be left at the residence requesting that the reading be called in. All let runs must be metered or estimated in order to determine the amount of billed water. Where possible, consumer usage amounts will be based on average billing period consumption history available over the past year or two years determined through water department history records.
A letter will be sent to all customers who are determined to be on the let run. The cover letter outlines the procedures to follow; the authorization form attached MUST be signed and returned to the Water Department. This authorization form confirms your participation in the program, thus granting you credit for additional usage on your water bill.

Our records indicate that your account at: _______ is one that is normally scheduled for a water let-run service. Enclosed is an authorization form which outlines the Water Department's let-run policy. Please read the form carefully, sign and return it to: The City of Iron Mountain, Water Department Office at 501 So. Stephenson Avenue, Iron Mountain, MI 49801, WITHIN 10 DAYS.
THERE ARE SEVERAL IMPORTANT ITEMS TO REMEMBER:
- The attached form is a request for an authorized let-run. Signing and returning the form is NOT AUTHORIZATION TO BEGIN LETTING YOUR WATER RUN. (You will be notified when to start)
- Let-runs MUST be authorized by the Water Department in accordance with the attached form.
- DO NOT BEGIN YOUR LET-RUN UNTIL YOU ARE NOTIFIED BY THE WATER DEPARTMENT.
- IF YOU BEGIN OR CONTINUE TO LET RUN WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION, YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR ALL WATER USED.
Let-runs will begin as weather conditions warrant. Remember, DO NOT BEGIN YOUR LET-RUN UNTIL YOU RECEIVE AUTHORIZATION FROM THE WATER DEPARTMENT.

The water and wastewater bill received bi-monthly will include full charges for all water metered in excess of the 1800 cubic feet allotment for running your water. This allotment is considered adequate to prevent freezing, but is not intended to reduce the fee for water consumed. If this allotment is not used for its intended purpose and as a result freezing does occur, this authorization will be immediately rescinded and you will be charged for all metered water from that date. Fixed fees will remain the same and will not be affected by this let-run authorization.
If approved by the Water Department foreman, this agreement will be valid only until April 1, 200_, or until informed otherwise. If the need for the let-run is a direct result of an individual homeowners plumbing related problem, you will be required to take the appropriate steps to correct the problem. Any homeowner/business owner who is advised to take corrective action and fails to do so by December 31, 200_, will not be given a let-run authorization and will be charged for all water metered during the designated let-run period.
You will be notified when to start the let-run program for the property located at__________________. If you wish to participate in the let-run program you must, sign and return this form to the Water Department, at the above address, within 10 days or not later than __________.
