About Us

As of August 2006, the revitalization efforts in downtown Iron Mountain have grown due to the Downtown Development Authorities participation in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Main Street Program.  Participation in this program was awarded to Iron Mountain by way of a grant process through Michigan's Cool Cities Initiative, aimed at creating more jobs and investment in Michigan's downtowns.  A revitalization program aimed at improving historic downtown districts, the Cool Cities Main Street Program has proven successful in many communities across Michigan.

With the help of intense training and services that are available through Main Street accreditation, Iron Mountain is working toward restoring its historic architecture while harvesting community participation and investment in the area.

This is done through the Main Street Four-Point Approach of Organization, Design, Promotions and Economic Restructuring.  Each of the four points has a subsequent committee of concerned members of the community.  Through community participation and financial contribution, the four committees work on projects aimed at accomplishing their specific goals.

Organizational Committee handles the administrative aspects of the program.  Through funding, program awareness, and volunteer recruitment and retention, this small committee works year around to ensure that all projects work together toward a common goal

Promotion Committee works to bring people into the downtown to enjoy all that it has to offer.  Events big and small are aimed at attracting visitors but also to showcase downtown businesses.  This is also done through the print materials that the committee works hard to distribute to raise awareness for all downtown events and businesses.

Design Committee has the ever important goal of improving the overall aesthetics of the downtown district while maintaining and restoring its historic architecture.  Historically sensitive design, maintenance plans and a pedestrian friendly downtown are many of the tools for a successful and attractive Main Street community.

Economic Restructuring Committee looks at business retention and recruitment for the downtown.  By being aware of today's changing consumer needs, this committee works toward increasing the competitiveness of Iron Mountain's downtown businesses.

Each committee holds monthly meetings that are open to the public.  The Main Street Program welcomes new faces and fresh ideas in their constant pursuit to better the community.
